Hair Tour for Families

The Hair Tour brought families through the European and American galleries. Pointing to hairdos as a fun point of access, we discussed wigs, hair and dress styles in regards to class, status and history. We also studied the do’s and don’ts of hair styles based on the preferences of professional contemporary stylists. We identified and hair as an abstract form, and did an art making activity in response. Thanks to the stylists at Richard Herrerra About Hair, and Museum Docents Jennifer Hanson and Christine Nelson.

Museum Tour Remix: Singing Tour with Nate Lombard, Catherine Mehta, Becky Miller, Dan Nelson, and Larry Yess. Songs for The Dying Gaul, The Drunken Cobbler, Bougereau, Matthew McCaslin, Philip Guston, Ceramics, Dan Flavin, and The Women Artists.

Through collaborations with local musicians, museum staff and volunteers, I have co-written songs about and inspired by artworks in the museum’s collection. These songs can entice, delight, and offer new perspectives to education and interpretation. The songs will live as an iPod tour starting in March, 2012.

Museum Tour Remix! January

Think you know what to expect on a museum tour? Maybe it’s time to think again. Throughout the month of January, join me for an experimental series that remixes and re-imagines what can happen on a museum tour and encourages participants to experience the museum and its collections in multiple ways. Tours depart from the Park Ave entrance and are free with museum admission. No reservation required except where noted.

Singing Tour – Through collaborations with local musicians, museum staff and volunteers, I will co-write and perform songs about and inspired by artworks and artists in the museum collection. This experience will bring spectacle, delight and varied perspectives to the museum tour, and will live on as a playlist on the museum’s iPods.

Friday January 6, 6pm

Saturday January 7, 3pm

Conversational Companion- The museum meets the library. Stop in to “check out” yours truly for a 30-minute stroll through the collection. Less an “expert” and more of an equal, this tour seeks to comingle Lexa’s insights as artist in residence to the thoughts and impressions of visitors as they spend time together looking and talking. Reservations can be made online or onsite for individuals or small groups of up to six people.

Cheers for Art! Tour

An ongoing residency project, Cheers for Art! will be performed in collaboration with professional cheerleader Stephanie Drachman and museum guards. A goal of project is to intersect populist cheerleading with “high” art, to consider the collection and art world from feminine and feminist perspectives, and to add spectacle to the museum experience, making guests stop, look and rethink their expectations.

Ted’s Talk

A long-time Portland Art Museum security guard and witty conversationalist, Ted Smith, joins me in leading a “people’s” tour of the collection that draws on his many years of engaging all kinds of museum-goers—from first-timers to frequent visitors—about art in the galleries.

“Hair” Tours for Families

A continuation of her One of Us project from Shine A Light 2011, I guide families on a tour of “Hair” in the Museum. Promoting a sense of adventure, fantasy, exploration and play, families will look at hats, headpieces and wigs in artworks in the American and European collections. The tour will draw on the age old game of Tableau Vivant, as participants try on cardboard “wig” frames and re-enact their favorite styles. Photography is encouraged!

As both an artist and cook, I link food, art, and conversation in this tasty food-inspired series.

Museum Special- Local bakers make art-inspired “Museum Specials” available only at Museum Grounds cafe. Items will change monthly.

Begins January 3

Food cART

Local Portland food (and beer) carts design menu items, both savory and sweet, to serve on Saturdays and Free Fourth Fridays. All specials will be inspired by works in the museum’s collection. The project facilitates interpretation of artworks through food and creates a social space at the museum to share ideas over a meal. Launched at Shine A Light 2011, this project references artist Eric Steen’s popular Art and Beer at the previous Shine A Light events.

Socially Engaged Art Making Workshop for Teens: Tuesdays 4-6pm, 2/24/12 - 4/24/12

Are you intrigued by how art is shaped by the community, and how the community shapes ideas of art? If you are between the ages of 14-17 this workshop may interest you. This is a free 10 week course, in which the class will investigate the social as material, in a range of formats, from public art objects and intervention, to performance and happenings, to conversation, documentary, alternative education, and others. We’ll make art influenced by your local youth culture and put art out into the community. The course will focus on individual and group art projects. Our final projects will culminate with collaborations for/with/about local community partners.

If you are interested in attending this workshop, please submit a CV that outlines why you would like to be in the course and any collaborative experience you have had (this can be anything from group projects or sports to even hanging out with friends). All application CV’s must be submitted to danae.hutson@pam.org by February 1, 2012.
